Nvidia Details Legacy Support Plans for DirectX 10 Generation Graphics Cards
Just as Microsoft is getting ready to end support for Windows XP next month, Nvidia also has an end in sight for its own legacy products, though it's not coming up quite as quickly. When Nvidia gets around to releasing its GeForce 343 drivers, support will officially end for all DirectX 10 generation graphics cards, freeing the GPU maker to focus soley on Fermi, Kepler, and Maxwell products.

This doesn't mean you have to rush out and buy a new graphics card, as Nvidia will continue to support your old hardware up through its upcoming GeForce 340 drivers. However, that will be the end of the line for such products.

"The Release 340 drivers will continue to support these products until April 1, 2016, and the Nvidia support team will continue to address driver issues for these products in driver branches up to and including Release 340. However, future driver enhancements and optimizations in driver releases after Release 340 will not support these products," Nvidia states on a new support page.

Lots of GPUs will be affected by this, including all GeForce 8 and 9 Series desktop parts, and GeForce 7, 8, and 9 Series notebook GPUs, to name just a few. This also affects Nvidia's professional line, such as the Quadro FX 5800 and others.

Linus Torvalds suspends key Linux developer
An argument between developers of some of the most basic parts of Linux turned heated this week, resulting in a prominent Red Hat employee and code contributor being banned from working on the Linux kernel.

Kay Sievers, a well-known open-source software engineer, is a key developer of systemd, a system management framework for Linux-based operating systems. Systemd is currently used by several prominent Linux distributions, including two of the most prominent enterprise distros, Red Hat and SUSE. It was recently announced that Ubuntu would adopt systemd in future versions as well.

Sievers was banned by kernel maintainer Linus Torvalds on Wednesday for failing to address an issue that caused systemd to interact with the Linux kernel in negative ways. Specifically, the command line entry "debug" ran both the base kernel's debugging routine and that of systemd, potentially flooding some systems.

Torvalds bashed Sievers for lacking responsibility in a mailing list message. "Key[sic], I'm [expletive] tired of the fact that you don't fix problems in the code *you* write, so that the kernel then has to work around the problems you cause," he wrote.

Report: VESA Accepts AMD FreeSync
Back in January, AMD was showing off its alternative to Nvidia's G-Sync – FreeSync. This alternative was built on open standards; it worked on panels with VESA's variable VBLANK support, which is occasionally found in laptops. While panels in desktop monitors could theoretically support the technology, the connectivity means didn't, making it rather difficult to implement. Only embedded-DisplayPort had support.
[...]
For that we have VESA. A report on the French website Hardware.fr states that AMD has approached VESA and suggested implementing the technology in the specifications for the DisplayPort 1.2a standard. The report also states that the proposal has been accepted.

VESA Adds Adaptive-Sync to DisplayPort 1.2a Standard
The last half-year or so has seen the concept of variable refresh desktop monitors advance rather quickly. After sitting on the technology backburner for a number of years, the issue came to the forefront of the PC graphics industry late last year when NVIDIA announced G-Sync, the first such desktop implementation (and unfortunately proprietary implementation) of the concept. AMD in turn fired back at NVIDIA at CES this year, demonstrating their FreeSync concept, which could implement variable refresh through features found in the embedded DisplayPort (eDP) standard. Since then the technology has been in something of a holding pattern – NVIDIA and their partners are still prepping retail G-Sync monitors, meanwhile AMD and the VESA have needed to bridge the specification gap between eDP and DisplayPort.

To that end, the VESA sends word today that they have done just that with the latest update to the DisplayPort 1.2a standard. Adaptive-Sync (not to be confused with NVIDIA’s Adaptive V-Sync), the eDP feature that allows for variable refresh monitors, has been added to the DisplayPort 1.2a standard as an optional feature. We’ve been expecting this addition since AMD first announced their FreeSync concept, however until now it wasn’t clear whether Adaptive-Sync would first be added to DisplayPort 1.2a or rolled into the forthcoming DisplayPort 1.3 standard, so we’re glad to see that it’s the former rather than the latter.

DRM and the Challenge of Serving Users

Reconciling Mozilla’s Mission and W3C EME
With most competing browsers and the content industry embracing the W3C EME specification, Mozilla has little choice but to implement EME as well so our users can continue to access all content they want to enjoy.

Silverlight is more vulnerable than Flash and Java
Conclusion
In March a Russian criminal forum announced that the Neutrino EK developer is selling the full exploit pack. Another post reported that Neutrino currently brings in $30,000 per month for its owner. Assuming that figure is correct, there is ample incentive to continue creating, maintaining, and updating these exploit packs.

The exploit kit drive-by campaigns fueled by malvertising continue to be effective, and given the web’s ubiquity in the work place, this channel is crucially important for inspection and detection. While patching may be an effective counter measure in this case, targeted watering hole attacks leveraging zero day exploits continue to necessitate a behavioral detection framework.

Businesses should be developing or acquiring intelligent solutions that incorporate a threat centric model for enhanced visibility into all stages of an attack regardless of whether it’s targeted or an equal opportunity victim attack. While traditional security mechanisms (firewall, IDS, etc.) are reasonable to support defense-in-depth, it is the advanced statistical analysis of all available data that will automatically identify behavioral anomalies and deliver finished threat intelligence to analysts, especially in the context of web based drive-by attacks.

AMD Demonstrates First FreeSync Monitor Prototype
Here at Computex AMD is showing off the first prototype monitor that is FreeSync capable, which interestingly enough is based on a retail monitor that was hardware capable and could be converted with updated firmware. AMD’s actual demo hasn’t changed – they’re still running the fan blade demo we saw at CES 2014 – but it’s now running on external monitors. The monitor in question operates with a fairly narrow range of rates of just 40Hz to 60Hz, which for the purposes of a prototype is good enough to showcase that the technology works, though it is narrower than the refresh ranges AMD is expecting for retail monitors.

At this point AMD is emphasizing that while they were able to get FreeSync up and running on existing hardware, owners shouldn’t be expecting firmware updates as this is very unlikely to happen (though this is ultimately up to monitor manufacturers). Instead AMD is using it to demonstrate that existing panels and scalers already exist that are capable of variable refresh, and that retail monitors should not require significant/expensive technology upgrades. Meanwhile AMD is also holding to their earlier projection of 6-12 months for retail monitor availability with retail prototypes expected around September, which puts final retail availability potentially as early as very late this year, but more likely into the first half of 2015.

Finally we have a video interview of the FreeSync demo in action. It bears mentioning that YouTube is limited to 30fps, so while we can give you some idea of what FreeSync performs like it’s not a fully capable representation. That will have to wait for closer to release when we can sit down with a high speed camera.

in concluzie, Free-Sync nu e deloc "free" :|

CNET Accused of Bundling Software Downloads with Trojans
A software wrapper used by CNET supposedly tricks users into installing toolbars and Trojans instead of the actual hosted program.

Gordon "Fyodor" Lyon is the creator and maintainer of the widely-used network auditing and penetration-testing tool called Nmap. It's a handy tool for administrators that can spot services that shouldn't be running, locate rogue PCs and servers, identify firewalls on the network and more. You would think that having a download mirror like CNET would bring a significant load of traffic to Lyon's software.

Well it has, just not in a good way.

According to the developer, CNET's Download.com repository has bundled his free software with Trojans and shady toolbars without his consent. Security firm Sophos backs up the claims and explains that it's encased in a software wrapper -- aka the Download.com Installer which was introduced back in July -- that tricks the potential customer into installing the Babylon Toolbar. To do this, the wrapper pops up a dialog headlined "Nmap" with a bright green default "Accept" button. But accepting only means CNET visitors accept the "special offer" of the toolbar instead... accepting the installation of Nmap comes later.

RIAA REVENUE DROPS TO RECORD LOW
The RIAA has submitted its latest tax filing to the IRS, covering the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, which provides some background on how the organization is faring.

Continuing the trend from recent years the total revenue of the anti-piracy group dropped once again, to $24.2 million. This is a record low in recent history, and down more than 50% compared to four years ago.

Gmail Bug Could Have Exposed Every User’s Address
Until recently, anyone may have been able to assemble a list of every Gmail account in the world. All it would have taken, according to one security researcher’s analysis, was some clever tweaking of a web page’s characters and a lot of patience.

Oren Hafif says that he found and helped fix a bug in Google’s Gmail service that could have been used to extract millions of Gmail addresses, if not all of them, in a matter of days or weeks. The trick would not have exposed passwords or otherwise allowed easy access to those accounts, but could have left users vulnerable to spam, phishing or password-guessing attacks. The bug may have existed for years.

Astea-s vremurile.

Ah, and get good passwords.
