‘The Exit’ and Other Short Stories
Join a motley crew of Marines left to their own devices in an abandoned, barely operational compound. With the Ghost in charge of their evac gone, and the rumblings of a potential Zerg threat in the vicinity, they’ll be forced to play the hand they’ve been dealt if they want to survive.

If there was one thing the old marine was right about, it was the bitter cold. Six hours ago the furnace had finally burnt out, and although they'd found many things in the old bunker, fuel wasn't one of them. The geothermal conduits running through the floor offered the only heat they had left, but it was abysmally inadequate.

Play Nice, Play Fair - How We Fight Cheating in StarCraft II
Blizzard Entertainment has always taken active measures to combat cheating in our games, and that's of particular importance for a highly competitive game like StarCraft II. If a StarCraft II player is found to be cheating or using hacks or modifications in any form, then that player can be permanently banned from the game, as outlined in our end user license agreement. This means that the player will be permanently unable to log in to Battle.net to play StarCraft II with his or her account.

Blizzard combats cheaters in a variety of ways. The first, and most important of these is through the in-game reporting system. In the Score Screen, you’ll see that you can select a player’s name to open a drop-down menu. By selecting ‘More…’, and then ‘Report Player’, you will open a window. You can then select the option ‘Cheating’, and provide a description about what specifically aroused your suspicion. Including links to any relevant replays is also highly encouraged. Our hacks team is constantly monitoring these in-game reports, and will launch investigations on players who draw a lot of attention.

Another effective way of reporting is to simply send us a replay of the game in which you played against a suspected cheater. You can do this by e-mailing hacks@blizzard.com and either attaching, or providing a URL link to, a replay file. The replay will then be investigated by our hacks team.

We also employ software detection methods to discover hack program usage. While we can't go into much detail about these methods, we can say that players caught cheating in this way are generally banned in waves. This is done so as to not tip off program developers regarding our detection methods, as well as to maximize the return on our detection efforts. Ban waves are issued in contrast to the other methods mentioned above, where bans are issued on an individual, account-by-account basis.

Through these means, any player who is determined to be in violation of our terms and conditions by using hacks, cheats, mods, or any other unauthorized third-party software will be banned.

We’d like to thank our players for constantly practicing and promoting a healthy competitive environment. Working with our community to ensure a fair and level playing field is important to Blizzard. As players ourselves, we investigate all reports of cheating as thoroughly as possible and take action when appropriate. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them in the thread below and we will answer them as possible!

See you on the battlefields!

David Kim Talks with OGN
The weekly airing of "Star Haeng Show" has been broadcasting about all things related to StarCraft on OGN in Korea. Earlier this week they aired their over-the-phone interview with David Kim. Below is the English translation of the interview:

Q: Please say hello to the SHS viewers.

A: Hello, my name is David Kim and I work as a Senior Game Designer at the StarCraft development team. Nice to meet you.

Q: What are some of the things that you consider important when releasing a balance patch, and whose opinion do you listen to most?

A: The balance issue to StarCraft II cannot be determined or judged with just one aspect, so we receive feedback from many people. For example, from the pro-players, shoutcasters, forums, communities, ladder statistics, top-tier ladder results, tournament results and etc. We check various aspects and make a decision after taking everything into mind.

Q: What are your thoughts on the recent opinions that Protoss is too strong?

A: We feel that Protoss has been very strong for quite a while now, and Terran have been weak, so we are preparing a patch update. As you know, we are getting ready for a balance test map, and so when the testing is complete, we plan to quickly go ahead with the patch update.

Q: Can you give us some details on the patch update that is being planned?

A: We are testing two things with the widow mine. First is widening the area of its splash damage, and the second thing we are testing within the team is rolling back the basic damage to what it used to be: making it 40 damage within the same 1.75 area and leaving the shield damage. Such changes will bring back the use of widow mines like in the past between the Zerg and Terran, and since it wasn’t used too much against Protoss back then we feel that maybe leaving the shield damage will help out in both battles. (The two changes can be decided through testing or in a different method through the feedback from our community and players)

Two additional changes include making the Thor attack air units first such as attacking Mutalisks than Zerglings. And we also nerfed the Time Warp by about half, but are testing to see whether there needs to be additional weakening to be made.

Q: What was the background behind strengthening the widow mine? Why did you plan and then decide not to make changes to the medivac?

A: We received a lot of feedback on the medivac. We felt that when looking at both the medivac and the widow mine, the medivac especially strengthens the mid-game and we agreed that the Widow Mine can strengthen both the mid to end game of a battle and felt it was important to test the widow mine first. We also received feedback from the players and agreed that TvZ was a bit more serious than TvP, and thought of a change that would strengthen the Terran both in its mid to end game versus the Zerg. It will only help the mid-game against the Protoss, but we decided to go ahead with changes to the widow mine because it helps battles against both races.

Q: There are many thoughts on the warp gate (being too much of an advantage)

A: Of course when the time come where we feel it is too strong for other races to win, it would be possible to nerf, but each race has unique characteristics including both strengths and weaknesses. We feel that the variety of uniqueness of each race is good. In that sense, the warp gate of Protoss is a special strength, and getting rid of this will be impossible but nerfing it can happen if the need pops up.

Q: You can always set some kind of a handicap for using the warp gate.

A: We can if needed, but the main objective to our balance patch updates is to create a big effect by changing very little. So if we make big changes to the warp gate, this will mean creating too much of a change and disturbance from the start to end of the game, and this is why are aren’t considering that option at the moment. But change is something that is not impossible as we can definitely make changes, but it is important to receive feedback, analyze the problem, take a deeper look and make the decision afterwards.

Q: In our recent episode of SHS, we talked about the balance issue in SCII, on whether players should overcome balance issues or whether balance patches are the answer.

A: We feel that both are important. Leaning towards one way too much isn’t that good. It is not good to leave everything up to the players and never release any balance patch updates and on the other hand, also going ahead with balance patch updates several times a month and trying to fix things per tournament and per match that people feel there is a problem with. We feel it is important to be somewhere in the middle. For example, for the long-lasting strength of Protoss, it has been a while because we tried to change as little as possible in our patches and give the players a chance to find an answer, but now we feel that we need to fix the problem properly.

In WoL eSports days, we feel that we waited too long and should have released a patch update earlier for the strength that the Broodlord-Infester combination showed. This is because the game itself became boring and there was no battle or action throughout the start-mid-end game, but rather had both sides stack up on multi bases, increase unit count to 200, and then fight (when both are loaded). We feel that because of the long boring time period that this combination showed, maybe we should have released a patch update faster.

For the widow mine on the other hand, we received a lot of feedback saying that this is too much of a problem in TvZ in Heart of the Swarm. While we received many feedbacks from the players and community, we also felt that it was too strong, leading us to nerf the widow mine. However, for that instance, we feel that maybe it would have been better to leave it up to the players a little bit more. This is because when the widow mine came into the game, while it helped Terrans win more agaist Zerg, the match itself was really exciting with endless action from about the 10 minute mark. Since there was many fun matches, we feel that maybe it would have been better to wait. While each situation has different answers, I feel it is important to determine the situation and making the correct choice each time.

Q: Some of the cast of SHS(including special guest Flash) said that the patches are released too often. What are your thoughts on this?

A: Korean players tend to give similar feedback, but the western players tell us absolutely the opposite and say that patches should be made more quickly. Just looking at the Korean players, not all players think the same way and opinions tend to split making it tough for us. But we feel it is good to wait as much as we can or change as little as possible through patches so that players don’t need to practice from scratch but just for the part where changes were made. We approached Protoss in a similar fashion and feel that is why Protoss has stayed strong for quite a while. However we feel that now is the time to make a significant change and break away from this situation.

While we value the opinions of the players, for a sustainable eSports environment, it is important to become fun for the fans. When a fan plays only Terran and there are hardly any Terrans in the leagues like the past GSL seasons, the fun aspect of eSports can drop and that is why we feel that going through a significant patch is important.

Q: What are your thoughts on the opinion that there needs to be more of a micro-controlling aspect and the controls now are too automated and easy?

A: We feel that some of this problem has been shown among the Protoss players where there was less of a difference in terms of control between the very top and mid to top tier players. This is something that isn’t easy to fix within Heart of the Swarm, but something the development team is working very hard on before the beta of our next expansion. We feel that ultimately it is important to make the very top tier players in each race differentiate themselves through such changes (to micro).

Q: Is there anything that you can hint on Legacy of the Void?

A: What we can tell you now is that the StarCraft II development team has been working hard on the next expansion for a long time. As for multiplayer, we not only consider what we feel would be ideal for the new expansion, but also listen, debate, and test the feedback we received from our community, players, and etc. to figure out what is best.

Q: What are some of the difficulties in adjusting balance, and what would like for the players and fans know?

A: There have been some misunderstandings in communicating with the Korean players because they tend to say that their feedback was not taken into account. The reality is that some Protoss player will say that Protoss should be buffed, Zergs will say Protoss are too strong and should be nerfed, and there will be another player that will say the exact opposite to both of them. We still feel that listening to player feedback is important to figure out what they think, and we would like to request that player continue to give feedback even if not everything leads to changes.

For the fans, as OGN said in the debate topic, there are times that we need to give players to find an answer and delay any patches, and there are also time where a patch update must be made. What we would like to request to the fans is that it is good to give us the usual feedback where they point out which is good for them, but it can be very helpful for both us and the players if they can give us feedback on how differently they want to see players play the game with the changes.

With such efforts for all parties, we hope to make StarCraft II into a better game.

Q: Is there any chance any of the Brood War units coming back to StarCraft II?

A: We received a lot of feedback on that, but we feel that it isn’t important to bring in units into StarCraft II just because it existed in Brood War. But since it is good to have a (friendly) Brood War unit come into StarCraft II by changing the design and upgrading it, we are in talks about this and are testing some things.

We can’t guarantee whether any Brood War units will come back, but this is something that we are talking a lot about.

Q: Are there any plans to strengthen some of the units that we don’t see often such as the Battlecruiser and Carrier?

A: Units like the Battlecruiser and Carrier aren’t easy to control, but are units that don’t require a lot of skills whether you are a top class player or lower class player. If we were to make changes, it would be first to fix the differentiating factor and then strengthening them.

But for Heart of the Swarm, we usually make patch updates based on what is needed rather than making drastic changes, so we feel it may be right to test various things and make the decision in our next beta.

Q: A last few words for the StarCraft II fans.

A: We are currently preparing a balance test map. We feel this map is important for us, as Protoss has been strong and Terran weak especially in Korea, we want you to actively take part in the testing process and give us a lot of feedback so that we can overcome any situations together. Thank you.

It's the Fourth Anniversary for StarCraft II!

A very special time has arrived for Blizzard, and this is especially true for StarCraft II and its players! On July 27th, we will reach the four year anniversary for StarCraft II, and to celebrate the occasion, we have celebratory content and experiences for you!

If you haven't seen it yet, there's a pleasant surprise waiting for you in StarCraft II right now... all workers are donning party hats to celebrate the occasion! With the hats being stylishly customized to befit each race, all players can help celebrate the anniversary with us by simply opening up the client and jumping into a game.

Now if only we can find where the workers hid the fruit punch and birthday cake...

And while birthday hats are cool, if you want to go even harder on the celebrating, we're not going to stop you. In fact, we want to help you out! Alongside the party hats our workers are sporting, we've also released some awesome new portraits for each race to celebrate the occasion. They'll look like what you see below, and you can unlock them simply by playing a game - starting tomorrow and through until the end of next week.

We're obviously excited about this anniversary, and we know you're just as excited. So get out there and game-it-up, try those icons, party with the party-hats, and just generally have some fun. We can't wait to see you online!

Happy Fourth Birthday StarCraft II!

Mod Turns StarCraft II Into A Cute Cartoon
Image

Some of you might recognize the cute StarCraft characters from the Carbot Animation series. They're unmistakable. After all the episodes on YouTube, the creator of the series is now working on an actual working map for the game, with his characters and animations replacing everything.

You can see various units from all three races fighting each other in this clip, mostly Zerglings, Zealots and Terran Marines. Try to rage quit after losing a game in an environment like this... It'll be impossible!
