ma joc cu webmin
Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. Using any modern web browser, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and much more. Webmin removes the need to manually edit Unix configuration files like /etc/passwd, and lets you manage a system from the console or remotely.

Grab your pitchforks: Ubuntu to switch to systemd on Monday
The Ubuntu Project is set to move forward with a plan to make a controversial system management tool a key part of Ubuntu Linux.

On Monday, March 9, the Ubuntu maintainers will reconfigure code base for the forthcoming version of the OS so that it uses the much-debated systemd suite of tools to handle core initialization tasks and manage system daemons.

That means that when Ubuntu 15.04 ships (presumably in April), all new Ubuntu installs will be running systemd by default.

It's a move that's sure to annoy some. When the Debian Project announced that it was switching to systemd last year, it sparked an angry protest by old-school admins who wanted Debian to stick with the familiar Unix System V–style init software to handle its startup and management chores.

That didn't stop Debian from following through on its plan, though, and the systemd naysayers were forced to take their metaphorical ball and go home – to a new, systemd-free fork of Debian, known as Devuan.

Linux Kernel 4.0 Features Live Kernel Patching
The good news is that Linux 4.0 makes having to reboot to complete a kernel update a thing of the past.

Well, almost.

The initial groundwork to support reboot-free patching arrives in this latest release, ready for experienced sysadmins to take advantage of in Linux 4.0.

Desktop Linux distributions should also be able to take advantage of the feature too (though given the complexity involved in configuring the reboot-less functionality on the end-user side it may be a little way off).

This infrastructure will continue to be refined and improved on over the course of the 4.x series.

Spam-blasting malware infects thousands of Linux and FreeBSD servers
Administrators who want to check their servers for Mumblehard infections should look for unexplained daemons. These so-called cronjobs added by the malware activate the backdoor and cause it to query C&C servers four times per hour in precise, 15-minute increments. The backdoor is usually located in the /tmp or /var/tmp folders. The backdoor can be deactivated by mounting the directories with the noexec option.
oh .. crap :?

Free at last. Acum să văd ce-i cu systemd ăsta.

Ubuntu still vulnerable to time-twiddling hack
it’s possible to use an already logged-in account to gain root access to the system without knowing the password, simply by tinkering with the system date and time. User Mark Smith, who first reported the bug in August 2013, said that the issue affected Ubuntu 13.04 as well as some versions of OS X, generally if they don’t require a password to change the system time settings.

Introducing Xubuntu core
Xubuntu core is a slimmed down version of Xubuntu that doesn’t come with all the additional features of a full and modern desktop. We essentially only ship Xfce and the basic look and feel of Xubuntu, so there will be no office suite, media players, et cetera.

The obvious benefit is that this ISO (about 600MB) will be faster to download – especially interesting for those with limited connectivity – and fit on a CD.

We have been working on this for a while, which is why you can already install it starting with Utopic. There are community ISOs for Vivid (see below), and starting with Wily, our plan is to produce official release ISOs!
Is this related to Snappy, Ubuntu Core, or Convergence?

Nope, sorry for the confusion in the name!
* Community ISOs are also available. These have been put to together by an Xubuntu developer but are not “official” releases. https://unit193.net/xubuntu/core/

Kubuntu Project Lead Asked To Step Down by Ubuntu Community Council
The project lead of Kubuntu has been told to step down by the Ubuntu Community Council.

In a spat that reads more like a plot from Game of Thrones, Jonathan Riddell has been told that his leadership of the Kubuntu community is ‘no longer recognised’ by the council — a decision that has left the Kubuntu community up in arms.

A set of emails containing the official statement from Ubuntu’s primary governance body, replies from both Jonathan Riddell and the Kubuntu Council and an intervention from Mark Shuttleworth backing the decision, have been published by Kubuntu community member Scott Kitterman to help shed light on the unfolding
Part of the brouhaha appears to stem from a request made by Riddell for clarification of Canonical’s policy on the licensing implications of derivative distributions. His reaction upon being given answers he felt were unsatisfactory allegedly left some members of the CC feeling uncomfortable and stressed.
what the fuck?!

Riddell, for his part, has never claimed to be leader of the project. In theory there’s nothing for him to ‘step down’ from, more step aside from doing.

Review: Ubuntu 15.04 is an amazing release, but I hate it
There's just one teensy, tiny problem here ("teensy, tiny" being code for "huge, colossal, Extinction Level Event" problem) – Ubuntu is about to completely replace the display server (switching from X.org to the internally-developed-at-Canonical Mir) as well as drop the stable, polished Unity 7.3 for a new codebase in Unity 8.

The Unity Desktop was made the default Desktop Environment in Ubuntu version 11.04, four years ago. I'm going to repeat that again to make sure that point sinks in – it took four years from the time Unity was made the default environment until it became truly stable, polished, and reliable. Four. Years.

Now, Ubuntu is not only going to move to a new-codebase Unity, but also a completely new (and, comparatively, untested) display server. All this possibly happening as early as Ubuntu 15.10, to be released later this year.

Ubuntu e ptr toata lumea.
Deci GNOME all the way. E si mai eseteticos.

Terminalul este sfant. Fiecare comanda are un manual. #df (disk free) are manual in #man df. Toate sunt asa. #man cd, #man lspci... etc.

you can break into a Linux system (Grub2) by pressing BackSpace 28 times - Ubuntu, Red Hat and Debian already patched
The researchers, Hector Marco and Ismael Ripoll from the Cybersecurity Group at Polytechnic University of Valencia, found that it’s possible to bypass all security of a locked-down Linux machine by exploiting a bug in the Grub2 bootloader. Essentially, hitting backspace 28 times when the machine asks for your username accesses the “Grub rescue shell,” and once there, you can access the computer’s data or install malware.
