Shenmue

Post by ola small dickie »

"Finally ported and rereleased with its sequel, we take our best shot at this ambitious, pioneering genre-blender with a two-in-one review."

The Good:

Beautifully presented with rarely-explored cultural setting
Simple premise leads to an epic adventure with a rich, engaging plot
Packed with activities and physical interactions
A wealth of interesting characters

The Bad:

Controls are clunky and dated, especially using keyboard and mouse
Awkward English voice-over and translations
Character models in particular really showing their age

Our Verdict:

While anything but a traditional adventure, the genre-blending saga of Shenmue I and II was once an influential pioneer in gaming history, and even twenty years later their bundled rerelease is a must-play for anyone who enjoys intriguing storylines and highly interactive, detailed open worlds.
