The Longing

Post by ola small dickie »

"Those craving a thoughtful, relaxing experience will find it in this beautiful and surprisingly prescient idle adventure spanning 400 real-time days."

The Good:

Real-time 400-day length allows for a unique and open-ended style of play while emphasizing themes of isolation, identity and the search for meaning
Presents a vast underground kingdom full of opportunities to explore and secrets to discover
Beautiful hand-drawn art
Dungeon-synth soundtrack perfectly captures the many emotions the setting evokes

The Bad:

Moves extremely slowly by design, and long stretches where nothing much happens definitely won’t be for everyone
Lack of save function means multiple endings require more than one playthrough to see, and at least one feels abrupt and anticlimactic

Our Verdict:

The Longing uses isolation, open space and freedom of choice to send players on a year-long exploration of loneliness, identity and meaning in real time. It won’t be to everybody’s taste, but those who commit to seeing it through will find a surprising, poignant and rewarding experience unlike anything else out there.
