Nasty WinRAR bug is being actively exploited to install hard-to-detect malware
The flaw, disclosed last month by Check Point Research, garnered instant mass attention because it made it possible for attackers to surreptitiously install persistent malicious applications when a target opened a compressed ZIP file using any version of WinRAR released over the past 19 years. The absolute path traversal made it possible for archive files to extract to the Windows startup folder (or any other folder of the archive creator’s choosing) without generating a warning. From there, malicious payloads would automatically be run the next time the computer rebooted.

One recent example piggybacks on a bootlegged copy of Ariana Grande’s hit album Thank U, Next with a file name of ‘Ariana_Grande-thank_u,_next(2019)_[320].rar,’” McAfee Research Architect Craig Schmugar wrote in the post. “When a vulnerable version of WinRAR is used to extract the contents of this archive, a malicious payload is created in the Startup folder behind the scenes. User Access Control (UAC) is bypassed, so no alert is displayed to the user. The next time the system restarts, the malware is run.”

Screenshots included in the post show that the malicious file extracts benign MP3 files to the target’s download folder. Under the hood, however, the RAR file also extracted a file titled “hi.exe” to the startup folder. Once the computer was rebooted, it installed a generic trojan that, according to the Google-owned VirusTotal service, was detected by just nine AV providers. Schmugar didn’t say if all 100 exploits McAfee identified install the same malware.

Google reportedly ends business with Huawei, will cut it off from Play Store
President Trump issued an executive order last week banning "foreign adversaries" from doing telecommunication business in the US. The move was widely understood as a ban on Huawei products, and now we're starting to see the fallout. According to a report from Reuters, Google has "suspended" business with Huawei, and the company will be locked out of Google's Android ecosystem. It's the ZTE ban all over again.

Reuters details the fallout from Trump's order, saying "Huawei Technologies Co Ltd will immediately lose access to updates to the Android operating system, and the next version of its smartphones outside of China will also lose access to popular applications and services including the Google Play Store and Gmail app."

Acum surprise pikachu ah stai că nu-i bine de fapt.

I'm loving every bit of AMD's announcement, aproape ca mi-e mila de Intel. Aproape.

Go go red team

Si despre Steam Hardware Survey: AMD says Valve is underestimating its success in the Steam Hardware Survey
In a recent interview for Hot Hardware, AMD’s Scott Herkelman suggests that a bug introduced in August 2017 caused AMD systems be underestimated – and he suggests the problem is still affecting results.

The error involves Steam counting every individual login at internet cafes (which are particularly popular in Asian countries) as separate PC configurations. So, if 10 people log into Steam on a single Intel-powered PC at an internet café – and opts in to the Steam Hardware Survey – then the survey will count it as 10 separate machines.

With AMD hardware not as widely used in internet cafes, Herkelman claims that this has resulted in AMD’s hardware popularity being under represented compared to its competitors.
