Backbone

"This gorgeous neo-noir animal mystery leaves plenty to chew on as it transforms into a genre-breaking art house adventure."

Image

The Good:

Distinctive, carefully constructed world
Relatable characters
Gorgeous graphics mixing pixel art with modern effects
Cinematic jazz score
Thought-provoking plot

The Bad:

Backstory is only lightly sketched
Dramatic and confusing shift in tone and genre during the last third
Many unresolved story points

Our Verdict:

Part noir thriller, part rumination on the human condition, and part ... something else, Backbone is stylish through and through, presenting more questions than answers but brimming with vibrantly realised characters.
