The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes

Post by ola small dickie »

"Supermassive comes out firing in its choice-driven horror game set during the Iraq War, but it's the characters and storytelling that make it rise above its predecessors."

The Good:

Enjoyable characterizations take center stage
Atmosphere benefits greatly from a more deliberate opening act
Action set pieces and some cheesy dialog feel right at home with a cast of battle-hardened Marines
Eye candy is present in everything from improved facial animations to desert lighting

The Bad:

Monster designs are not terribly interesting
Soundtrack is snappy during action scenes but otherwise forgettable
Main Hollywood star often looks notably less polished than the rest

Our Verdict:

House of Ashes proves that even an annual anthology release that’s so iterative in its gameplay mechanics can still evolve in significant ways. The changes evident here, and perhaps the developer’s maturation in storytelling, result in what may be the series’ strongest entry yet.
