EU Commission opens anti-trust case over geo-blocking

The European Union has today launched an antitrust investigation against several large U.S. movie studios and Sky UK. The European Commission wants to abolish geographical restrictions and has sent a statement of objections over the geo-blocking practices of six major US film studios including Disney, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros.

In parallel to the antitrust investigation the EU’s governing body adopted the new Digital Single Market Strategy earlier this year. One of the main pillars of the new strategy is to provide consumers and businesses with better access to digital goods and services.

New FCC Rules May Prevent Installing OpenWRT on WiFi Routers
 

“Wireless Battle of the Mesh” which will take place on August 3-8 in Maribor, Slovenia.
The talk scheduled for August 6 at 15:00 is entitled “openWRT vs. FCC – forced firmware lockdown?” and Simon Wunderlich, the speaker, provided the following abstract:

The new FCC rules are in effect in the United States from June 2nd 2015 for WiFi devices such as Access Points. They require to have the firmware locked down so End-Users can’t operate with non-compliant parameters (channels/frequencies, transmit power, DFS, …). In response, WiFi access point vendors start to lock down firmwares to prevent custom firmwares (such as OpenWRT) to be installed, using code signing, etc. Since the same type of devices are often sold world wide, this change does not only affect routers in the US, but also Europe, and this will also effect wireless communities.
We would like to discuss:

• What are your experiences with recently certified WiFi Hardware?
• How can we still keep OpenWRT on these devices?
• What can we suggest to Hardware vendors so that they keep their firmware open for community projects while still compliant with the FCC?

The rule in question is listed on the FCC website with the question “What are the software security requirements for non-SDR devices and what limitations apply to software configuration control for such devices?” and the critical part of the answer being “require all devices to implement software security to ensure that the devices operate as authorized and cannot be modified“.

A început oficial cenzura Internetului în România. De ce încalcă drepturile omului și nu ar trebui să o acceptăm

O instituție administrativă (Oficiul Național pentru Jocuri de Noroc, ONJN) și-a luat rolul de cenzor al site-urilor web pe care utilizatorii români le pot accesa.

Pe 12 iunie 2015 fost promulgată Legea nr. 124/2015 care aduce modificări Ordonanței de Urgență a Guvernului nr. 77/2009 privind organizarea și exploatarea jocurilor de noroc. Articolul 10(7) stipulează: „[...] Furnizorii de rețele și servicii de comunicații electronice [...], sunt obligați să respecte deciziile Comitetului de Supraveghere al O.N.J.N. referitoare la restricționarea accesului către site-urile de jocuri de noroc neautorizate în România, precum și cele referitoare la reclama și publicitatea acelor jocuri de noroc organizate de către un operator de jocuri de noroc nelicențiat în România”.

Pe 24 iunie 2015, ONJN a adoptat, fără dezbatere publică, o decizie, publicata pe site-ul instituției de abia după o lună de la adoptare, care nu numai că obligă furnizorii să blocheze accesul la unele site-uri prin DNS, ci și să redirecționeze utilizatorii către un site găzduit de STS (http://213.177.28.90/). La sfârșitul lui iulie 2015 ONJN deja a trimis o somație în acest sens la adresa furnizorilor de Internet prin care îi obligă să implementeze această decizie.

ApTI împreună cu alte 5 organizații non-guvernamentale au avertizat de anul trecut ONJN că măsurile propuse încalcă drepturile fundamentale, dar instituția respectiva a ignorat pur și simplu demersul nostru, inclusiv cererea de dezbatere publică înainte de adoptarea actului normativ. Astăzi am trimis o nouă cerere către ONJN, sperând că în ceasul al 12-lea decidenții din această instituție vor înțelege că nu este vorba despre o simplă chestiune tehnică, ci despre o măsură cu efecte nebănuite.

"Constituie contravenţie şi se sancţionează cu amendă de la 5.000 lei la 10.000 lei participarea persoanelor fizice de pe teritoriul României la activităţi de jocuri de noroc la distanţă, aşa cum sunt definite la art. 10 alin. (1) lit. h) - n), care nu sunt autorizate de O.N.J.N."

On a different note, acu it's all about IoT (Internet of Things) și practic devine cam necesar să se dea prioritate sistemelor de control între dispozitive în fața informației citibilă de către bipezi. În viitorul apropiat, probabil netul va fi folosit ca să controleze centralizat grila electrică și aparatele conectate la ea, să oprească și pornească remote lucruri pe care le consideră de prioritate redusă ca să mențină echilibrul in-out sau doar ca să-și bată puțin joc de unul-altul Really. Și va fi mult de reglat, ținând cont că vor fi omniprezente și vehiculele electrice. Just give it 20-25 years, at most. Le-ar fi imposibil să facă asta ok cu un net neutru...

Și ce zic ăia cu neutralitatea, dincolo de aspectele economice, era valabil când netul era doar o sursă de informație. Acum e un mijloc de control în din ce în ce mai mare măsură, so don't expect good things in the future.
