Twelve years after the debut you are more successful than the Strokes ever were.The new album "Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino" acts as a reflection of this very public expired development. At the beginning you were basically half children .
When I turned 32 in January, my mother congratulated me and asked if I was even aware that I have now spent half of my life in this band. She wanted to know if it was not time for something else, something sensible, for example.

The old parents question. Your parents have supported you in your musical ambitions, right?
Even very. Since I started playing the guitar as a kid. Later we rehearsed in our garage, and I was allowed to spend a year in school to focus on the band. My mother did not mean this birthday question very seriously, but she started a process with me.

Do you have to worry?
Not that one. But with the tour to the last album something has come to an end for us. Nobody could have said afterwards how it goes on. Until then, everything was like an eternal school trip. But now some of us got married, there were the first children, pregnancies. Changes were in the air. Matt Helders took the break most spectacularly: In the band of Iggy Pop you do not play every day.
That's still completely surreal for me. I watched two shows, it was so emotional. It was best in New York. Was this a post-break meeting to discuss the next steps?
We should have done that, but somehow it did not work that way. We met after the Iggy tour and our one with the Shadow Puppets , but did not have the slightest idea what to do. It has not come out much - except the realization that we still all like each other and want to continue at some point.

First, did you continue on your own path?
Back then I was in the middle of a production with the American singer Alexandra Savior . She and I wrote a lot for this album and made a lot of demos on a small eight-track recorder. This bedroom producer number was new to me, so we never worked with the band. I really enjoyed this method and wanted to approach the next Monkeys album in a similar way. " Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino" started with a piano, a recording device and me in one room.

The album musically opens a new chapter in Arctic Monkeys and acts in part as an interim review of your past history.
Basically, we've already started with a retrospective: Our debut was all about our early youth. But sure, the new album is a reflection in ignorance of the future. I sat at home and thought about how things developed. I was just in the indie disco and danced to the Strokes - and suddenly I stand on such stages myself. In between, I never had time to reflect that reasonably, it went on and on. I felt an urgent need to write about these things. At the same time, I have not found any poetry in this thought for a long time and did not know how to implement it musically.

Can you explain how you did it then?
That's always hard for me. Maybe you have to imagine a sculptor working on a block of marble for so long and then refining it until a sculpture comes out of it. However, this picture is unbelievably cheesy ... At least I tried to trick myself. To somehow enable me to write this music and lyrics.

How did you do that?
The breakthrough was the use of the piano. It reminded me of my dad, these jazz-like lounge chords have put me in a mood of their own in which I could create a kind of character for these lyrics. A fake figure, if you like.

Your father is a jazz musician. You played Sinatra songs at the piano when you were seven, so the album is also a return to your very early roots.
No, you can not say that, I was not that good at the time, I could not play any of these songs properly. But yes, my dad played saxophone and trumpet and a little piano. He himself might call himself a pianist. In fact, I was thinking a lot about him and his game when I wrote the album. Some of the piano parts remind me of the things I heard as a kid from the next room.

The lyrics are basically like rap lyrics for me. They are thus in an interesting contrast to the very classical music.
That would be the biggest compliment I could get. During production, I came to believe that the lyrics were written modern enough to counterbalance the music. The album should be classically designed, but not like a retro event, that was very important to me. We deliberately counteracted production as well.

The lyrics live from precise, almost journalistic observations mixed with surrealistic metaphors and authentic dialogical sequences such as in the song "One Point Perspective". The line »This stunning documentary that no one else saw / Search beautiful photography, it's worth it for the opening scene / I've been driving 'round listening to the score« could be taken from a pretentious cliché small talk at a vernissage. Do you record something one-to-one, or does that spring from your imagination?
I always and always write down everything that I like. For example, you referred to Matt Helders as Physical Monster, which I immediately noted. And this dialogical approach is a very effective way of staging my themes.

Add to that a special sense of humor: the song ends very abruptly. One could almost think that something was wrong with the system. Are you doing something extra?
The idea was to underline the text musically. You surely know that from parties too. When everyone is drunk, messing around senseless things and constantly losing the thread, I wanted to illustrate with this end: Suddenly the conversation breaks off.

At first glance, the album sounds like you could imagine a possible Alex Turner solo album. How did the other Monkeys find their place in this music?
I was never interested in making a solo album. I am a part of this band and would disrespect the other. Nevertheless, I wanted to make this music, it was in me. When you compose on the piano, you automatically get different results than on the guitar. And it was important to me to say goodbye to the realism of most of the Arctic-Monkeys stuff. Overall, it developed in a direction that soon made me realize she had absolutely nothing to do with what people would expect from a Monkeys record.

At what point in time did you let the others participate in the new songs?
Relatively early. When I finished the first demos, I invited Jamie to listen to everything and work on the songs together. He recorded a few guitars, had complementary ideas and was pretty enthusiastic overall. His enthusiasm has taken away my uncertainty. After a while, we brought Nick into the studio and played him our demo of The Star Treatment. He was also thrilled, and so I gradually got the green light from everyone.

The Arctic Monkeys: Alex Turner says it all on the new album.

After a successful album, Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys has decided to abandon the guitar riffs, listen to jazz and write an opus worthy of the great works of science-fiction.

Turner has begun to write the new album in his home in 2016, playing on the piano Steinway Vertegrand, offered by his manager as a birthday gift. But while Turner explored the Vertegrand, he also ended dealing with the themes of escape, virtual reality and the conquest of space. There are several references to science-fiction in the album, there is also a song which bears this name. "Science enables the creation of other worlds that can reflect ours, comment it," says Turner," and it is this idea that interested me".

"I often went to the art supplies shop," he says. He went there to buy cardboard, cut them with a knife, make different forms. "I spent a lot of time. Get up in the middle of the night and search, experiment. I started to call it "the model of the Entrance Hall", exploring the idea of these objects that are sometimes located in the halls of large buildings - as in 'Shining' - with this famous miniature labyrinth in the entrance hall. It is one of the greatest and probably most awaited comebacks of this season. After five years away from the spotlight, Arctic Monkeys are making their reappearance with Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (Domino/Music As Usual, 18). With a double somersault (IT DOES A DOZEN SOMERSAULTS AND LEAVES YOU SUPERCHARGED) into the void, following the evolution they began with their last album, AM, Alex Turner’s band forgets about guitars to become modern crooners and explore the territory of soul and R&B.

“We didn’t want to create any expectations on the new album while being all secretive about it,” asserts Alex. “We live in a society in which everyone is online all the time, sharing what they are doing or where they are constantly. We don’t. It’s funny because when you decide not to openly share your day-to-day with the rest of the world, it looks as if you’ve become a radical. But no, we haven’t kept anything as a secret, we’re simply not paying attention to tweets. On the contrary, all this time, whenever a fan approached me, I didn’t mind taking a picture together and to tell them what we were up to. I did notice, and I don’t know why, that the expectation for this album is greater this time than ever before. Maybe it’s because it’s been five years since our last album.” The wait is over. After a “lustrum” without any news about Arctic Monkeys, the Englishmen are about to break their silence with their new album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. “Actually I don’t feel it’s been that long,” admits the frontman from Sheffield’s band. “At least, we haven’t stopped moving. After the release of AM, I worked with a friend of mine, Alexandra Savior. We recorded Risk, which was in the second season of True Detective’s soundtrack. That was in 2015. Two years later, I coproduced, played several instruments on and helped her to compose her debut album, Belladonna of Sadness (2017). In between, I got back with Miles Kane and we recorded the second album for our project The Last Shadow Puppets, Everything You’ve Come to Expect (16), and then we went touring the album.” It was then, when the Puppets’ tour was over, that Alex Turner reunited Arctic Monkeys again. “From the outside, it may look as if I’ve spent these five years laying on the beach, but I actually feel as if I hadn’t stopped for a second.”

Locked up at home

Today is Wednesday, 7th March. You will not be reading this interview until two months later, when Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino will be released. In a quick trip to London, Alex Turner is waiting for me at the Town Hall Hotel, in Bethnal Green, to chat for an hour about their new work. His image is… Curious, different: an unshaved beard and long hair up in a ponytail. He speaks very slowly, carefully thinking before answering, but without leaving anything unanswered. He’s charming and extremely kind. “As soon as I was done with The Last Shadow Puppets, I immersed myself into the new album. I locked up at home and I started to compose and to record the first demos. It is true though that this time the process took longer than with our previous albums because I’ve spent more time working by myself, with the piano and a recorder.” Alex Turner remembers that the rest of the band would come over his place only once in a while to see what he was doing. And once they believed to have everything ready, they set off to a studio in Los Angeles. “But when we got back, I began to write more songs. That’s when we went to a studio in Paris where we spent five weeks. Then we went back to England and we recorded even more stuff in a studio from London. I could have kept on recording and recording, but the right moment to stop working on the album was precisely when we decided we were done. I’ve probably become more perfectionist over the years. In fact, this is the first album I’ve done since surpassing the age of 30.” The album was completely finished by the end of last November and, ever since then, Alex has finally been doing barely nothing or even nothing at all. Now, he says, he finds himself in a transition point, from having spent months composing and recording to being the centre of attention again. “But not only am I ready for it, but I can’t wait to be up on stage with the rest of Arctic Monkeys and play our new songs. Although, if I’m completely honest, there’s a part of me that also wishes that all of this, promotion, tour, etc., is over and I can go back to sit in front of the piano to write more songs.”

His silence

For Alex Turner, there are a lot of songs about love in pop music: “he loves you and she loves you” and stuff like that. One of his challenges as a songwriter is to try to go a step further or to loop the loop. “It’s almost as important what you say as how you say it. I try to find inspiration in all of my surroundings, in the world, through the news… Cinema and literature also inspire me a lot. When the tour with the Puppets was over, I read “Infinite Jest” by David Foster Wallace. That novel really impressed me and it’s been a major influence on this album. Jean-Pierre Melville’s cinema also inspired me. He has this film, Le Samouraï, from 1967, which soundtrack has been key to the making of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.”

The first song that Alex wrote for the new album was Star Treatment, which is in fact the opening track of the album. “In a way, it set the sound for the rest of the songs. It was like an open door that allowed us to immerse ourselves into this new sound.” Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino sounds like soul and jazz, possibly because of the piano’s preponderance. The monkeys’ leader agrees, “There are certain moments in the album, especially in tracks such as the album’s second song, One Point Perspective, that remind me of the type of songs my father would play in the piano. They go together well with the lyrics I was writing, there are chords from jazz, soul and I would also say that the album emits a certain science fiction’s essence. Although deep inside it’s still rock’n’roll.“ Their new reference is that of a modern crooner, something like an approach to the sounds of Nick Cave but through a less darker lens. “Nick Cave is always an inspiration. I’ve always been a fan of his. I admire him a lot,” reveals Turner. “Another artist I respect and that I would like to be like is Leonard Cohen. His last albums are crazy. I wish one day I can get to write a song like Almost Like The Blues. Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Nina Simone, Dion’s album “Born To Be With You” produced by Phil Spector are the influences behind Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino… And also, maybe because we were recording in Paris, I’ve listened to a lot of French songwriters. Chanson’s icons like Serge Gainsbourg or Nino Ferrer. And Italian singers like Celentano or Mina. And Moonlight Mile by The Rolling Stones. During the recording of the album we listened to that song on repeat.”

Even though their new tracks will surprise you and won’t leave you indifferente (some of you will love them, whereas some others will loathe them), if you listen to their whole discography, from Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not (2006) to Tranquilit Base Hotel & Casino, from beginning to end, you can perceive the evolution, and the leap doesn’t seem too extravagant. In fact, you could insight details of what Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino ended up being, in the album AM. “It is a big leap, but it doesn’t provoke me vertigo. I did fear the response from the fans on AM, because I considered it was a great evolution in comparison to our previous records. But this time I don’t feel as nervous as I did then. I think it was the record I wanted to make and to which I’ve given everything. Although I must admit that at some points, especially during the mixing, we would give looks to James Ford, our producer, as if we were saying that we had gone too far. One day, his wife Celine, perceived one of those looks and told us that we shouldn’t be afraid, because deep down we still sounded as before. The appearance has changed, but we’re still Arctic Monkeys”. Although it may be in appearance only, the change in Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is significant, but this evolution is what keeps Turner alive creatively. “I’ve always wanted to go one step further from what people expect from me, but this time it came on its own, in an unconscious or natural way”. He, the singer, guitarist, soul and motor of Arctic Monkeys, defends the fact that the plan was never to make a premeditated record like that, it just emerged. “I did approach the creative process in a different way in comparison to our previous work, with the piano as a main instrument, and that has taken me to different sonorous stops. I’ve also worked more on my own in the studio with those old instruments I’ve bought along these years. Yes, the process has been very different, and that has allowed me to reach the places I wanted to reach and those that I had never been to before”.

Some day

What hasn’t changed in Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is their producer, James Ford. Once again, Arctic Monkeys have trusted in the member of Simian Mobile Disco to trace the sonorous map of their newest work. “Yes, him again. We went through three studios, one in Los Angeles, another one in Paris and finally in London, but the producer is still our right-hand man since the beginning. He’s another member of the band. I have absolute faith on what he proposes and does. I don’t think anyone else understands my impulses and the creative directions I’d like to take the way he does. Not only that, but he’s an amazing artist, he’s great on the drums”. Josh Homme, frontman of the Queens Of The Stone Age and mentor of the Monkeys, did not participate this time. “We may call him for our next record.” Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino does count with collaborations with other musician friends, like Turner’s partners on The Last Shadow Puppets. “They have participated with vocals or details here and there, members from Tame Impala, Mini Mansions and Klaxons.” Alex Turner hurries the cappuccino asked before the interview started, which must be cold by now, the same moment in which a woman warns me and tells me there’s time left for one more question. Since he’s the one who took care of the album’s artwork, I can only think of asking him if he sees himself experiencing art apart from the music industry. “Some day I would like to… Write something that might not be destined to be used in a song, but right now I don’t have enough confidence. lights? cold but not too cold yellow/white spots, maybe round-follow-the-singer lights, da' gen mai multe, sa faca multe umbre, tot in genul lui 60. Fara lasere, fara culori saturate. I'd love that. Not much strobbing, fara jocuri de lumini energetice, fara chiestii hi tech, dar cu efect generos atmosferic. Desi multe elemente vizuale, daca ar fi sa le (e)numeri, cumva minimalist, esentializat. Gen antiteza spectacolelor edm. I'd fuckin' love that!

super curios cum o arata setul de tobe al lui helders. De-al lungul timpului a batut si seturi decorate minim, practic no bespoke paint jobs, etc, dar si super custom. Setul ala cu steagul angliei era misto tare.

Sa-i f.t in gat pe NME..

La NME din ce in ce s-a accentuat lipsa de scribi care sa nu fie fix p...a ce-a mai belita din univers. Pierde prostu' ala un paragraf intreg sa explice ce e cu luna si tranquility, cand putea s-o spuna intr-o propozitie scurta, sau sa prelinga informatia aia pe parcurs; nu zici ca s-ar fi inventat internetul la ala, trebuie sa dea detaliile sufletului, ani, etc. Da un link, futu-te-n ficat, si vorbeste despre album! Nu, ala sta sa deschida review-ul despre (probabil) cel mai asteptat album al anului cu golania aia, care nu a gandit-o nici trei secunde, prima bolborosire care i-a venit in minte, aia a pus-o in taste.

Garantat, sunt compuneri de elevi de clasa a patra care-s mai dezghetate, cu mai mult spirit. Si ala ii da 4 stele?! Ce-ar trebui sa fac cu patru stele ale lui, sa le fac topor si sa-l iau la feliat?! Are parerea lui nme fix zero rezonanta si credibilitate, putea sa dea cu zaru' ala, tot era mai interesant si mai de valoare.

Albumu' o sa fie extraordinar, fara nici un dubiu.

News and stuff, as you please, desi la momentul asta, numai sa fie cineva extrem de bun cu cuvintele si cu o intelegre sau pasiune iesita din comun pt AM sa-mi mai spuna ceva interesant. Nimic din ce-a titrat si dezbatut presa nu ma pregatise pentru ce-am auzit io ieri.

Stii ca-ti ziceam ca mi-e teama ca Turner sa nu faca muzica fara partea aia simtita, gen numai ceva intelectual, telefonat. Nici vorba de asa ceva, e intr-o forma de zile mari, cu o energie incredibila. O sa intre in istorie albumul asta. Toate impiedicarile si toate momentele lui Turner din trecut in care imi ziceam ca incearca ceva ciudat, care nu e el, cred ca erau cautari din partea lui, dar nu cautari de ceva in afara lui, ci cautari de ceva serios, care e parte din personalitatea lui. Cred ca a gasit/inceput sa gaseasca ce cauta cu albumul asta. E out there, Turner, dar cu zero awkwardness. Lots of passion and love in his voice, in ce-am auzit. Looks quite majestic, too, the sweet motherfucker. Hehe! Ce nu realizasem e ca mi-a fost o leaca dor de maimute. Chit ca i-am urmarit in TLSP pe Turner si pe Helders cu Post Pop Depression. Palesc in comparatie muncile astea ale lor. Si ailalti doi baieti sunt underrated rau. In cateva secunde iti dai seama ca AM e AM, si datorita lor, suta la suta.

Helders e aceiasi prezenta energetica, cum a fost si pana acum, mai constient poate pentru ce e esential pt. muzica. Am ascultat cateva secunde dintr-un bridge intr-o piesa, nu putea sa aleaga note mai bune sa sublinieze tensiunea, subtilitatea, culoarea, energia piesei. Si e acelasi Helders, acelasi sunet, acelasi feel, aceiasi personalitate, nu si-a abandonat nimic de-al lui, doar ca si-a ascutit creioanele mai bine petru Tranquility.

Turner si Helders si baietii au fabricat ceva remarcabil, Ola, remarcabil.
